CES 2024 was held from January 9th to January 12th, 2024, where over 135,000 visitors, including 3,500 companies and 1,000 startups, gathered to showcase important technology trends for the coming year. The show has continued to return to pre-pandemic activity levels as attendance increased by 20,000 over the previous year and many overseas exhibitors have returned. The 2024 edition of the show had several key themes, which included digital health, generative AI, sustainability, gaming, vehicle tech, cybersecurity, future of money, and space tech. AI was the hottest topic at the show as many of the exhibitors focused on how generative AI will impact both the consumer and enterprise IT sectors.

Key Trends from CES 2024

CES 2024 Trend 1: Pervasive AI – AI was the overarching theme at CES 2024 as it was the first edition of the show since the unveiling of generative AI solutions such as ChatGPT. AI was emphasized in all aspects of the show, including both hardware and software solutions. On the hardware side, smartphones and PCs were shown with on-device intelligence which will make using generative AI both more efficient and more secure, such as laptops integrating NPUs in addition to a CPU and a GPU. However, AI is also being integrated into more than just consumer electronics as, for example, Volkswagen announced that ChatGPT will be integrated into its electric vehicles going forward, including new models such as the ID 3, ID 4, and ID 5.

CES 2024 Trend 2: Smart Transportation – There has been an increasing presence of automotive companies at CES for many years as cars and other vehicles become more integrated with new technologies. In this year’s show, there was more of a focus on sustainability for electric vehicles with improved charging capabilities as opposed to self-driving technologies. AI was also a visible theme in the sector as companies such as BMW unveiled a sophisticated in-vehicle driver monitoring solution and Hyundai demonstrated driverless bulldozers and power shovels.

CES 2024 Trend 3: Smart Homes – Smart home technology is another sector which always has a strong presence at CES, and this year was no exception. In the past few years, there has been a high degree of emphasis on interoperability as vendors such as Amazon, Google, Samsung, and Panasonic strive to create smart home ecosystems. This year, the focus was more on interoperability as there was more support for the Matter industry standard and more announcements regarding inter-vendor smart home device interoperability.

CES 2024 Trend 4: XR/Metaverse – XR/Metaverse has not been as much of a focus at CES in recent years as it has passed the peak of the hype cycle and is now overshadowed by generative AI. The Metaverse is, however, quietly making a comeback due to generative AI as many new tools which will make it easier to create the metaverse using the technology were on display. There was also a series of new XR devices announced by vendors such as Pimax, XREAL, and RealWear showing that hardware development is still very much alive.

CES 2024 Trend 5: Digital Health – Since the onset of the 2019 COVID pandemic, there has been a greater emphasis on using wearables and IoT devices to monitor individual health conditions and this trend continued at CES 2024. Several new devices were shown which can monitor and improve a user’s health by monitoring conditions such as sleep quality, blood glucose levels, menstrual cycles, brain activity, and nutritional intake. Devices such as smart rings, smart beds, smart toilets, and smartwatches which can monitor these conditions were all exhibited at the show.
